Speaker Bio

Dr. Abby Stylianou
Dr. Abby Stylianou is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Saint Louis University and Fellow of the Taylor Geospatial Institute. She received a B.A. in Environmental Studies: Geoscience and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Washington University in St. Louis. Her research lies at the intersection of fine grained visual categorization, image retrieval, and explainable AI. Her lab works across a variety of different application domains, including building large scale image search tools to locate victims of sex trafficking who have been photographed in hotels, developing mobile applications and machine learning models for in field plant phenotyping and integration with plant genetics, and building models of how individuals interact with the world around them in outdoor webcam images to support better design of the built environment. Her lab also has a history of building machine learning benchmarks and running competitions focused on broadening participation in machine learning for science. Dr. Stylianou is a current co-chair of the Taylor Geospatial Institute Working Group on Geospatial AI.
